Who are we?

Health Century Toastmasters Club is an affiliate of Toastmasters International in Hong Kong, which is designated as District 80 Divisions H and K  in the global distribution of Toastmasters International. The Toastmasters movement began in America in the 1930's to help Toastmasters members to improve their public speaking techniques, listening skills, critical thinking, and leadership development. There are several different Toastmasters clubs in Hong Kong, some belonging to particular companies or academic institutions, while others are formed by like-minded people. Most clubs are dedicated to a single language (English, Cantonese, or Putonghua) in which their meetings are conducted.

Health Century Toastmasters Club is unique in the sense that:

(a) It is the only club in Hong Kong (maybe even in the world) presently that caters to speakers of all three main languages in the territory: English, Cantonese, and Putonghua.
(b) As suggested in our club's namesake "Health Century", we aim to affect, in this new century, a healthy mind, healthy living, healthy family, healthy society, and healthy world for the benefit of our members.

What do we do?

Like other Toastmasters clubs in the world, we aim to improve communication and leadership skills of our members. In each meeting our members present prepared speeches of their own chosen subjects. A member will be recognized as a Competent Toastmaster after he/she has successfully completed ten "programmed" speeches, each aiming to address different aspects in the training of one's public-speaking skills.

Each prepared speech will be evaluated by a fellow member acting as an Individual Evaluator who provides constructive criticism of the speech in a supportive manner.

One segment of the meeting which is most popular among members is Table Topics during which members are asked to do short impromptu speeches on subjects dictated on the spot.

There is a Time Keeper who tries to make sure each speaker fall within the alotted timespan, and an Ah Counter who records how many "ooh," "ah," "eh," "em," etc, that slip inadvertently out from under each speaker's tongue during his/her speech.

At the end of the meeting there is a Grammarian who comments on the use of language, grammar, and issues concerning correct pronunciations.

There are also regular speech competitions locally and internationally each year.
